座卓の意外な歴史 The history of zataku

皆さまこんにちは。
先日大柄の白人男性がお店にやってきて座卓を指差しこんな事を聞かれました。
Aloha everyone! How have you been?
I've got asked by a big white man who visited the store the other day,


こんな低い狭いスペースに日本人は座るのか？
"Wow, Japanese people sit down in such low and narrow space??"


そうです。
日本の文化では欠かせない座卓と、そこに座椅子を置いて団欒するという事が
洋風のテーブルとイスでの生活に慣れ親しんだ西洋文化の方々にとっては
驚かれることなのかもしれませんね。
Yes, we do!
The Japanese traditional Zataku (Japanese low table, average height 13"-14") culture might be surprising to Western people
since they use tables and chairs in their life for long.


そこで、私も少し座卓について勉強しました。
座卓は低いテーブルのことで、
その周りで家族で食事を取ったりくつろぐために使われ始めました。
しかし、その歴史は意外にも浅く、明治時代になってからのようです。
Zataku means low table and is used for having a meal with family or just for family gathering. However, the history of zataku isn't that old. It actually started in Meiji period (1868-1912).


明治時代は、日本が鎖国をやめ他国との通商を開始し、
西洋の文化を流入し始めるようになった点で大変化を遂げた時代でした。
その西洋化推進運動の一つがテーブルの導入であり、家族で同一の食卓を囲むという習慣が出来ました。
Meiji period is an important and notable period because Japan stopped national isolation and strated trading with other countries. Also, tons of Western merchandises came into Japan, and Japanese people experienced dramatic changes
in their lifestyles. The introduction of table was one of those changes and
it became a Japanese custom later on to have a meal with family at a same table.














しかし、まだまだ一般的な日本家屋で生活していた民衆は
畳の上に座って食事をするという文化を続けていた為、
背の低い「座卓」で食事を取る事が主流になっていきます。
座卓というのは言いようによっては明治維新がもたらした和洋折衷の生活用品なのかもしれません。
However, Japanese ordinary people at that time were still keeping their custom of having a meal on tatami floor, so what they used for table was zataku (low-table) so that they can eat food sitting on tatami floor using a low-table.
It can be said that zataku is a half-Japanese, half-Western compromise.
















では、明治時代以前の座卓が導入される前には人々はどのように食事を取っていたのでしょう。
江戸時代はまだまだ家族の中でも上下関係が厳しく（家父長制）座卓のように同じテーブルの上で
父親と一緒にものを食べる事が大変無礼に当たると考えられていました。
人々は銘々膳と呼ばれる個別のミニテーブルで食事を取る事が基本的だったのです。
By the way, how did Japanses people have dinner before using zataku?
In Edo period, it was thought to be very rude to have a meal with household master which means father at a same table because of a strict hierarchical relationship based on patriarchy. Therefore, people used each plate and tray with legs called meimeizen. Here is some pictures in below.


























確かに、去年の大河ドラマ「龍馬伝」では、家族での食事のシーンには銘々膳が使われていたことを
覚えています。
食事シーンを取ってみても、
上下関係に厳しく規律正しい日本文化が徐々に薄れてきてしまってるのは
なかなか寂しいことではありますが、
座卓で食事を取る事によって家族の輪が小さくなり、家族との距離が縮むのは座卓の長所かもしれません。
I remember that meimeizen was used in one of the scenes of Ryoma-den (japanese historical drama of last year). In Ryoma-den, every family member was sitting in front of his/her own meimeizen during meal very quietly. There was a rule of patriarchy with respect to a family master. On the other hand, zataku makes family get closer each other and makes it possible to communicate with family more casually.
